How can a parent prepare his or her
child for the first gynecology visit?
A parent can share with the child that she will be having
an initial reproductive health visit to offer both screening
and guidance. It is unlikely she will require a pelvic
exam, and she does not need a pap test until age 21.
I also recommend that parents tell their child that the
visit will include an evaluation of her menstrual cycle. It
would be helpful for your daughter to chart her menstrual
cycle on a calendar prior to coming in for her visit.
Gynecologists like to think of the menstrual cycle as an
additional vital sign in assessing the patient's overall health
status. Just like an abnormal blood pressure or heart rate

may be key to diagnosing health conditions, identifying
abnormal menstrual patterns might improve early
identification of potential future health concerns.

What is the Crozer-Keystone
Tots to Teens Program?
I am excited to have joined the Crozer-Keystone Tots
to Teens Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology program
as of August 2017. For nearly 10 years, the program
has offered individualized, compassionate care to
diagnose, manage and treat gynecologic issues in females
under the age of 25. The medical team comprises
adolescent medicine and gynecology providers.
We place a strong emphasis on communicating with our
patients and their families in a caring and sensitive manner.
The team knows how to talk to children and adolescents
about their concerns in a way they understand and trust.
When needed, we work closely with referring providers
to coordinate ongoing care and follow-up. Pediatric and
adolescent gynecology services are offered in four office
locations in Broomall, Media, Springfield and Upland.

The North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent
Gynecology (NASPAG) is an organization committed
to the reproductive needs of children and adolescents.
Their mission is to "provide multidisciplinary leadership
in education, research and gynecologic care to improve
the reproductive health of youth." To access further
