Delaware County Medical Society Winter 2017 - 23

On September 19, 2017 the HTF announced a new program
to help those in long-term recovery. Together with the
Delaware County Chamber of Commerce and other partners,
"Second Chance Employment" was created, aimed at helping
those in recovery obtain employment. This pilot program
is targeted towards women currently in treatment at MVP
Recovery. The Chamber's partnership includes educating
its members and the business community about the need
for and also the benefits of hiring a person in recovery.
On September 21, 2017 Delaware County became the
first county in Pennsylvania to sue for damages against
eleven major pharmaceutical suppliers of opioids. The
suit alleges that these companies conspired to deceitfully
promote and market opioids for decades in the treatment
of chronic pain. Other counties have since followed suit.

According to data from the DEA, drug overdose deaths in
2016 rose by 37% across Pennsylvania. In Delaware County
we saw a 2% increase from 2015. Surrounding counties saw
double digit increases as high as 54%. This epidemic is not
limited to the inner cities as was the crack cocaine epidemic
of the 1980s. It will take a structured collaborative effort at
all levels of the government and community to effectively
impact this horrible epidemic. Physicians equipped with
the right knowledge will play a crucial role in this battle.
