THE LAST TIME Mercury Marine got a
new president was when Pat Mackey's
position was filled by Mark Schwabero,
on Thursday, November 6th, 2008. And,
what a time that was!
We covered this in detail in the
December 2008 Boating Industry
Canada magazine and opened that story
by noting that "...the softening marine
market that began in 2007 was now
accelerating at an increasing pace
through 2008. The sub-prime mortgage
meltdown had thrown the world financial markets into chaos and slowed
down the flow of credit into the marketplace. The US presidential election was
still a few weeks away and featured an
elderly warhorse Republican facing off
against what could be America's first
black president."
We wrote that, "Hollywood couldn't
have scripted a climate of greater uncertainty and there we were, interviewing
Mark Schwabero who was at that time,
president of the Brunswick Corporation
Outboard Business Unit."
The world has changed dramatically!
As President, Schwabero carried a
massive load of responsibility and practically lived at the headquarters in Fond
du Lac, Wisconsin, presiding over
Mercury's share of the constantly shrinking marine marketplace. He protected
every job and every employee as long as
he could, but with the full support of
Brunswick Corporation CEO, Dusty
McCoy, Schwabero did what he had to
do to keep Mercury alive through what
turned out to be the longest economic
downturn since the Great Depression.
In that same December 2008 Boating
Industry Canada magazine we included
a Propulsion feature; a detailed visit to
the Mercury Verado assembly line. This
engine debuted in 2004 and was state of
the art in design and manufacturing for
four-stroke outboards. It had been a
Mercury's new president, John Pfeifer was in
his element introducing their new 350
Verado and Verado 400R engines to the
press in a by-invitation-only media session
on February 11, 2015.
