Lifteime Achievement Award winners Bruce Atkinson (L) and Roland DesChamp (R) are icons of the Nova Scotia Boatbuilding industry with well over 100 years of experience between them. They are flanked on the left by NSBA Executive Director Tim Edwards and on the right by NSBA Chairman Glen Aylward of glas ocean engineering, Paul Jamer of Breakwater group and dave gerr. the moderator was Aaron Porter who did a good job of keeping both the panelists and the audience on topic. Both sue molloy and Paul Jamer, who are both working at the leading edge of the development of marine renewable energy and sustainable engineering technology, pointed out how quickly the parameters which define efficiency and practicality are changing. the next big oil price shock, and there will be one, will quickly change the cost benefit analysis for hybrid propulsion systems. while a long range motor yacht may not benefit from a hybrid system since it is able to run its engines at their optimum rpm for long periods of time, the many large sport fishing battlewagons are a different matter. these boats generally use huge engines to get out to the canyons at high speed and then spend hours at idle speed for trolling. here a switch to battery powered electric motors may well make sense. sue molloy noted the potential use in the lobster fishery where, like the sport fishing boats, a large engine is needed to get out to the fishing grounds but then traps are retrieved at idle. most on the panel and audience agreed that where fishers were concerned, the bottom line rather than good intentions would be the deciding factor. Paul Jamer mentioned what he called the "Prius factor". when someone has invested the extra cost for hybrid power and the information on efficiency is constantly in front of you, this tends to effect driving habits. on yachts this could also be a factor in modifying operator behaviour. Considering the panel discussion was the last event of the conference, the packed room at the end spoke volumes for the level of interest from the delegates. Feedback from attendees, including some who frequent much larger and better known conferences, was extremely positive. As Aaron Porter said after the event "I do appreciate the kicked-back informality ... coupled with a depth of professional knowledge and practical experience among members and attendees." - By Glen Cairns www.nsboats.com No. 1106 Downrigger The most popular Scotty electric with a boom that telescopes for extra reach and collapses for extra storage.
