tHe BOat sHOp: aByC What I Did On my summer vacation part I BY BRIAN GOODWIN, ABYC TECHNICAL DIRECTOR OFten tImes the best way to learn about something is to do it. When it comes to investigating a boat fire, it is easier said than done. However that is just what happened on May 29 & 30 at the Marine Fire Investigation Course held at the Middlesex County Fire Academy in New Jersey. This class was orchestrated by ABYC member Daniel Rutherford and supported by a cast of characters too long to list. Participants who attended the two day hands-on course conducted a team fire investigation on freshly burned boats. Prior to the arrival of the participants, 13 boats were staged and burned. This was no small task as scenarios had to be developed, boats had to be obtained and a location to burn the boat had to be found. The only fortunate bi-product of Hurricane Sandy was that numerous boats were totalled and available for the task. The Middlesex County Fire Academy was an ideal location and they made a day available to Daniel and his team to set ablaze the boats in a controlled environment. Scenarios ranged from arson to a closed seacock leading to an overheating exhaust pipe in contact with combustible items stored by the owner. Day one started out with an introduction of the instructors, followed by a lecture on the appropriate standards for fire ABYC Board Member Kenneth Weinbrecht burning boats prior to the course. investigation: NFPA 1033 Standard for Professional Qualifications for Investigator, NFPA 921 Guide for Fire & Explosion Investigation and of course ABYC standards as Kenny Weinbrecht reinforced, "access to the ABYC standards is critical for investigating a boat fire.
