brating their 85th Anniversary in the coming year and it will
also be Charlie's own 85th birthday. Not many people are still
actively engaged in business at that age, but Charlie is not your
average person.
For example, Charlie learned how to barefoot waterski in
his early 60s. He is not just in the boat business. He adores the
boat business and boating, and with his wife Chris, heads up
to his cottage almost every weekend.
In recent years, Charlie has begun taking an annual trip to
some very distant locations in the far north and down south.
He likes travel. Charlie and Chris vacation in different
places each year. Sometimes those are cruises, other times
they've chosen a "Sampler Tour" like their winter vacation last
year. They flew to London, took the train to Belgium, then up
to the Netherlands, down past Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and
Zurich to Lucerne, then west and north to Paris before they
returned home...and back to CC Marine. I'm surprised he
could stay away even that long!

The Growing Catalog

The facility was designed with high ceilings and there is a
long staircase leading to the upper level where they have more
storage, more offices, a training/board room facility and of
course, the extensively used lunchroom and coffee area.
That's a long flight of stairs but Charlie goes up at the same
rate as everyone else. He's a bit more cautious coming down
because in just the last few months, he has had both hips
replaced!
I expect this will work out well for Charlie because the doctors always tell patients to stay moving and flexible after a hip
replacement. Charlie almost never stops moving!
His energy level is legendary and clearly, he inherited great
genes from his father Currey Bulmer who remained active in
the business until his 90s and continued driving a car until he
was 97 years of age.
The purpose to our Impact profile articles in Boating
Industry Canada is to celebrate somebody who has had an
important and positive impact on the marine industry and has
achieved important goals.
Well, in terms of major milestones, CC Marine will be cele-

Another way in which Charlie and CC Marine have had an
important Impact in Canada's marine industry is how Charlie
has led the CC Marine family to one season of success after
another and today, their catalog runs an astonishing 1217
pages of products.
Of course, everything's also online and that range of products makes them beneficial to the industry. Although Canada
has a number of successful marine distributors, few have the
range and selection of products that CC Marine offers.
With each passing year, new products are introduced and
added to the CC Marine catalog. It is a constantly growing
range of products and the company continues to experience
steady growth. The new building that seemed cavernous a
decade ago is filled to the roof today!
CC Marine makes a point of hiring bright young students to
work there during the summers, which is an arrangement that
supports the seasonal increase in workloads, accommodates
vacation time for the regular staff and provides an interesting
point of entry to the marine industry for young people.
In addition to doing their part to bring young people into
the industry, CC Marine has always supported Boating Ontario
and the Georgian College program. It is part of Charlie's way to
return the kindness and support he has always had from the
industry, especially from a few key people.

In His Own Words
Charlie wanted to express some of that in his own words and
he wrote the following brief story for me.
"I started to work with my father after school in the early
1950s. Then, when I finished school, I really got into the
marine business. By this time, we had moved into our new
showroom on Bathurst Street. We were selling Johnson outboard motors and Peterborough cedar strip boats. We hauled
the boats from Peterborough Ontario. I was part of this. We
were using a farmer's barn to store the boats. We stored about
