CROSSING THE LINE

Let's Make the

America's Cup
Great Again

In less than three months, the 2017 America's Cup will be
underway in Bermuda. It will be sailed in new, faster than ever
48-foot foiling catamarans that will hit nearly 50 knots. Very
exciting, but is it the optimal experience that the fabled Cup can
offer? We think NOT!
Since 1851 the race has been essentially the same. Yes, the
boats evolved from slick schooners, immense J-class sloops and
over-canvassed cutters. Then the Australians built the fastest
12-metre and won the cup in 1983. Right, we know all that.
For a while the America's Cup was sailed but basically no one
cared until 2013 (I hope you've noted the historical accuracy
that your energetic scribe has poured into this article) when the
Golden Gate Yacht Club sailed the race in 72-foot cats that sped
across San Francisco Bay and created quite a worldwide impression. There were a few teensy problems - the boats were so fast
they were unstable, they crashed, broke up but, not unlike professional wrestling, that created a lot of fun for fans. And
Bermuda will probably be equally exciting. But then what? We
will have seen how wet and stressed sailors can be - the max
game will have been achieved. But the America's Cup must go
on, so here's the only logical next step.
Frankly, I'm surprised the sponsors have left it to me to sort
the AC out and bring it into the NOW. The racing does not
match the luxury aims of the sponsors or the viewers. Does
Louis Vuitton genuinely think the guys on those carbon fiber
pitchpoling catamarans keep their gear in $18,000 designer
bags? Hardly.
That's why the next America's Cub should be contested in onedesign Carver C52 Command Bridge luxury cruisers. Compare
those bare bones wet, scary foiling cats with the C52. The
brochure details three staterooms and two heads in one of the
most spacious layouts of any boat in its class. "Owners will enjoy

its large, open-concept cockpit with fully opening glass doors. Two
additional staterooms, a second head with a stall shower, a large
aft galley, and a host of well-thought-out amenities."
From here, I can see you nodding in agreement. The
America's Cup, the pinnacle of on the water experience, sponsored by ultra-luxury brands and garlanded in schmaltz and
extravagance deserves an experience that is a little more mature
and sophisticated.
This new version of the Cup will not be any less of a test of
skills. Crewed by athletic family members with the requisite
driver, crew + two ice cream eating children the boats could easily be sponsored by Disney. Never mind the complex rules of
sailing and endless upwind legs; the races will last maybe ¾
hour allowing more opportunity to explore Sardinia or the
Swedish archipelago for spectators and a series of informative
hair transplant and hotel search infomercials for the viewers.
Instead of wet suits and soggy hair, the crews will be well coiffed
and nicely attired allowing for additional sponsorship money to
pour in.
Picture it from the sponsor's viewpoint. In close ups during
the race the crews can be seen packing and unpacking their
Vuitton luggage while they check their Panerai watches, safe
from pounding waves and falling spars.
Sure, we've seen these high performance sailors grapple for
the esteemed Cup, risk their bodies in the salt and wet to
emerge exhausted on the dock for the winner interview. But let's
move on - we've been there and done that - wouldn't you rather
see a happy and attractive family stepping off their dry boat to
the screams of the adoring throngs. I appeal to the NY Yacht
Club and America's Cup organizers - please allow us to evolve.
After 126 years, isn't it about time? *
