VANTAGE POINT Been there, done that... and can't wait to go back! Welcome to Canadian Yachting magazine's Waypoints Winter Cruising special edition! This is the ideal time of year to plan that winter escape to Paradise. Many people, including many of our readers I'm sure, make plans at this time of year to head south for a break from our winter weather. Perhaps you will take some time over Christmas, or plan a get-away for the depths of winter in January or February, but whatever time you choose, chances are you'll be heading south to a resort. Compared to the cold weather and snow here at home, a trip south to Florida, Mexico or the Caribbean is such a dramatic change that it makes your vacation even more exciting and memorable. We've all seen the travel brochures; the sunny weather, white sand beaches and the azure waters are a powerful appeal to somebody who's staring at grey skies and slushy roads! You can't beat the convenience of a resort, especially one of those all-inclusive spots where you go from the airport to poolside, get a drink in your hand and relax on a lounge chair for the week, getting up only to make your way to the dining room for your meals. Certainly that's relaxing and a change of pace from home, but it's nothing like taking a charter boat to a remote island where you may have the beach all to yourself. I've had the pleasure taking our own boat to places that more than fulfil the dream of those travel brochures for spectacular beauty and yet, we had the beach to ourselves too. Our ocean-side bar was in the cockpit of our boat, time was our own and if we liked where we were, we could stay. If we thought there was something more interesting up ahead, we could haul anchor and head out. If you have never had the experience of taking a private boat through Caribbean islands I can only say it's an experience that deserves to be a top choice on anyone's bucket list. In this issue of Canadian Yachting Sheryl and Paul Shard, stars of the Distant Shores television show and frequent contributors to our magazine, offer some great advice on planning your charter boat trip to paradise. They talk about how they got started, taking a boat with a captain at first to become familiar with how to make this a safe and convenient experience and then, they went on to actually bring their own boat down south. They have now been cruising for many years and they still love the experience! Our own Galley Guy, Greg Nicoll took his own group to the Abacos where this group of sailors connected with their first-ever experience on board one of the Moorings marvellous new 514 Power Cats. I'm sure lots of readers feel that their sailing skills might not be up to handling a bareboat charter, but as our Moorings group discovered, the convenience, stability and spacious accommodations of their 514 Power Cat made it much easier to do while also experiencing better than 'resort quality' accommodations. Seeking out those spectacular beaches, colourful little communities and memorable rum shacks is an experience like no other. We hope this issue of Canadian Yachting inspires you take your own charter boat vacation to tick off another item on your own bucket list.
