A UNIQUE SLANT OF LIGHT:
THE BICENTENNIAL HISTORY
OF LOUISIANA ART
KNOWLA FEATURES BIOGRAPHIES
OF LOUISIANA GOVERNORS AND
SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICES
A Unique Slant of Light: The Bicentennial History of Louisiana Art, a
landmark book published by the Louisiana Endowment for the
Humanities (LEH) in September 2012, includes 276 entries on
Louisiana artists, authored by dozens of notable scholars and more
than 400 images from private collections and the state’s major
museums and archives. Commissioned by Louisiana's Bicentennial
Commission and edited by Michael Sartisky, Ph.D., president of the
LEH; J. Richard Gruber, Ph.D., director emeritus of the Ogden
Museum of Southern Art; and Associate Editor John Kemp, the
book, priced at $120, is widely available at bookstores and can be
ordered through www.leh.org or through the University Press of
Mississippi.
The book is also accessible free of charge in a digital format at
the LEH website (www.leh.org), where descriptions of the artists
featured in the print edition are linked to KnowLA, the Digital
Encyclopedia of Louisiana (www.knowla.org), which offers
additional image galleries and expanded biographical information.
This issue of Louisiana Cultural Vistas features several stories
adapted from the print/digital partnership of A Unique Slant of Light
and KnowLA, including the essays about photo-artists Louviere +
Vanessa and 19th-century painter George David Coulon. Future
issues of the magazine will continue to share the scholarship and
artistry from the book and website.
KnowLA, the Digital Encyclopedia of
Louisiana History and Culture
(www.knowla.org), through a
partnership with the Louisiana
Historical Association, now features the
biographies of the entire pantheon of
Louisiana governors.
Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne
From the trials of Sieur de Sauvolve
de Bienville
and Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville in 1699,
forward to 2012, the stories of those 71
individuals at the helm of Louisiana's
tumultuous history make for
fascinating reading. Of equal merit is
the variety of accompanying media and
images, from maps of the earliest
William C.C. Claiborne
settlement of New Orleans, to portraits
and letters that bring to life the
circumstances and character of
Louisiana's leaders.
Upon the bicentennial of the
Louisiana Supreme Court, the online
encyclopedia will soon feature
Huey P. Long
biographies of all 25 Louisiana Supreme
Court Chief Justices, from George C.
Mathews, who presided over the court
shortly after Louisiana’s admission to
the Union in 1812, to Bernette J.
Johnson, the state’s first African
American chief justice, who took the
oath on February 1, 2013.

KnowLA provides a comprehensive,
dynamic and free online reference guide to the history and
culture of Louisiana.
