Carnival celebration. To attract weekend visitors, the
new krewe paraded the Friday evening before Mardi
Gras. Hermes also offered out-of-towners
opportunities to see its elaborate tableau balls, which
became one of the season's most sought-after
invitations for decades to come.
Highlights of the exhibition include the queen's
dress and mantle worn by Marjorie Lee Smith in the
krewe's first ball in 1937 paired with the glittering
gown of the 2013 Hermes queen, Taylor Rees. The
1937 ensemble has been restored for the exhibition
through a generous gift from the krewe to the
Louisiana State Museum.
Also on display are elaborately printed ball
invitations, krewe favors, costume designs and float
designs as well as crowns, scepters and costumes. The
critically acclaimed 2011 Hermes parade, The Court of
