LETTER TO THE EDITOR This morning, as happens several mornings recently, I was thumbing through Unique Slant of Light. Different days find different images arresting. This morning, I was struck by George Louis Viavant's Wood Duck with Young. What a wonderful image. I assume, because it’s in the collection of the Viavant family, it's not available for live viewing, which if so is a shame. Anyway, I had not heard of the artist, so of course I went to KnowLa.org to learn more. Arriving there, I learned that there was an extensive article published in the Summer 2004 edition of Louisiana Cultural Vistas. One click and I was there. The thing is, because I had clicked the entire issue button, I had to leaf through the pages of the magazine to get to the article on Viavant, which was near the back. As I leafed, I came upon many fine articles about other photographers, artists and artisans. It was taking a while. Then, beginning at page 41, I came to the article “Walter Anderson’s New Orleans,” written by Patricia Pinson, whom I learned is the curator of the Walter Anderson Museum of Art. The punchline is, I never did get to the Viavant article, at least not today. Ms. Pinson’s lucid writing and the Anderson images presented were revelations. I came away resolving to buy the book from which the article is excerpted and, next time in New Orleans, to make the trip to Ocean Springs. So from book to website to magazine, I had me a journey of discovery, full of pleasure. For which I say, thank you. – Stephen Rosenfeld Boston, Massachusetts Dear Stephen: Yours is the kind of letter that makes all our hard work and sacrifices worthwhile. You have described exactly the rich, complex, layered approach to knowledge that we have endeavored to structure into the Bicentennial book, KnowLA, and Louisiana Cultural Vistas. Not often enough do we receive direct confirmation that our efforts are having the impact intended. Thank you so much for taking the time to elaborate for us. Eventually, I hope you also find the Viavant article worth reading. Who knows where it might lead you… Thank you so much. – Michael Sartisky, Ph.D. Editor-in-Chief FISCAL YEAR 2011 2012 MAJOR GIFTS NON ANNUAL F UND 233,000 98,625 75,000 50,000 47,500 44,460 50,000 37,280 25,000 25,000 25,000 Shell Oil Company Foundation Community Foundation of North Louisiana Zemurray Foundation Helis Foundation Louisiana Bicentennial Commission Baptist Community Ministries John Cleveland Zapp’s Potato Chips Libby-Dufour Fund Irene W. & C.B.
