The Historic New Orleans Collection 108 CIVIL WAR THROUGH THE NEW CENTURY MORGAN WHITNEY b. 1869, New Orleans, Louisiana d. 1913, New Orleans, Louisiana Morgan Whitney was the scion of a wealthy New Orleans banking family who pursued a variety of artistic endeavors with both enthusiasm and dedication. His contributions to the artistic community of belle époque New Orleans were both as a photographer and a collector/philanthropist. Whitney studied with Albert Herter at the Beaux Arts Academy in Paris, France, and as early as 1892, exhibited paintings in New Orleans, but painting was not his principal avocation. As a photographer, Whitney left a legacy of hundreds of images, all in the form of platinum prints. Though many of his subjects are of urban landmarks or scenic views made in the countryside around New Orleans, he also photographed floral arrangements, both alone and in tableaux with his jade collection.
