HELEN MARIA TURNER b. 1858, Louisville, Kentucky d. 1958, New Orleans, Louisiana Helen le Grange McLellan, 1928 Oil on canvas; 50 x 40 in. The Historic New Orleans Collection Gift of Mrs. Gustave Pitard Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Helen Maria Turner died in New Orleans in 1958 just ten months short of her one-hundredth birthday. Though not a native-born Louisianian, Turner lived the majority of her life in the state. Through her long career as an artist, she moved from Realism to Impressionism, using media as varied as pastels, watercolors, and oils to create portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and miniatures. She was best known, however, for her paintings of people in their own homes and women in gardens.
