A Unique Slant of Light: The Bicentennial History of Art in Louisiana - (Page 214)

Shifting States - Tunisia, 2011 Permanent ink on paper; 30 x 30 in. Arthur Roger Gallery 214 ART IN CONTEMPORARY LOUISIANA LUIS CRUZ AZACETA b. 1942, Havana, Cuba Cuban-born and New Orleans-based artist Luis Cruz Azaceta explores a dark side of America in his work. His monumental assemblages of barricades and photo constructions of urban blight— representing both hope and decay within American culture—reflect continuing ambiguity toward his adopted homeland. In many of his series, he creates deceptively whimsical and almost playful labyrinths painted in tension-creating counterpoints of color and form as devices to portray this dichotomy between his life in exile and the past.
