A Unique Slant of Light: The Bicentennial History of Art in Louisiana - (Page 275)

SALLY HELLER b. 1956, New Orleans, Louisiana Up Rooted, 2007 Mixed media installation; 12 x 10 x 11 ft. Collection of Sally Heller Sally Heller’s multimedia installations entertain, but more importantly they make one think about the absurdities of modern society and pop culture. Heller uses improbable ordinary household items, construction materials, and the detritus of modern society to create an illusionary sense of beauty, transcendence, and fragility that threatens the real and natural world. Heller’s room-sized installations are often statements about the delicate balance between consumerism and a vulnerable environment. A setting seemingly so fragile—nature, as depicted in Up Rooted—is made up of materials that are permanent: petrochemical and other nonbiodegradable objects.
