ART IN CONTEMPORARY LOUISIANA
“PROPHET” ROYAL ROBERTSON
b. 1930, St, Mary Parish, Louisiana d. 1997, Houston, Texas Self-taught artist “Prophet” Royal Robertson combined futuristic imagery with patches of rambling calligraphy that bemoaned his wife's departure after nearly two decades of marriage, an overwhelming obsession in his life and art. Like other notable visionary artists from the South, Robertson’s oeuvre reflects the region’s sympathy for and responsiveness to personal internal visions, divine revelations, and dreams. Robertson also recorded the frequent visions that transported him to the past or the future; he depicted aliens, fantastic modes of transportation, futuristic space cities, and modernistic architectural marvels.
