Battle of New Orleans, 1815 Oil on canvas; 29 x 36 in. New Orleans Museum of Art Gift of Edgar William and Bernice Crysler Garbisch
Jean–Hyacinthe Laclotte is most remembered for his iconic oil-on-canvas painting depicting the 1815 Battle of New Orleans. Laclotte is said to have painted from hand-drawn sketches composed during the hour-long battle. The painting is now in the New Orleans Museum of Art, and remains popular through reproduction copies sold by art dealers. An artist, architect, and engineer, Laclotte designed the Orleans Theater and planned the Faubourg Plaisance subdivision. LEH
