INTERNATIONAL UPDATE SECTION 301 TARIFFS ON IMPORTS FROM CHINA WHAT On April 3, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) released a proposed list of 1,300 products, including a number of auto parts imported from China that would be subject to an additional duty of 25 percent, pursuant to its Section 301 investigation on China's unfair trade practices related to the forced transfer of U.S. technology and intellectual property. Imposing tariffs on these products would not alleviate the U.S.-China trade deficit, as production would very likely move to another low cost country. STATUS USTR received more than 2,500 public comments and held a three-day hearing as part of its review process. On June 15, USTR released a final notice on products subject to the tariffs. Parties can submit requests for product exclusions by Oct. 9.
