Section I - Aftermarket Highlights AFTERMARKET HIGHLIGHTS AFTERMARKET SIZE * The 2014 U.S. aftermarket totaled $230.8 billion in products and services at user-price. * All types of aftermarket products reached $142.9 billion during 2014 at user-price. * Cars and light trucks comprised the largest 2014 aftermarket product segment, $101.6 billion at user-price. * Heavy and medium trucks recorded $27.6 billion in 2014 aftermarket products. * Other aftermarket product use reached $13.7 billion during 2014 at user-price. * Purchased Service for all types of vehicles totaled $87.9 billion in 2014, averaging 2.8% annual growth between 2004 and 2014. PRODUCT SALES ANALYSIS 2014 * Light vehicle 2014 aftermarket product volume is analyzed for each of 80 key products. * The twelve top products totaled $53.88 billion in 2014 car and light truck aftermarket sales, representing 53.0% of total light vehicle aftermarket product volume. * Fourteen products exceeded 5.0% light vehicle growth during 2014; while another fourteen products achieved 4.0% to 4.9% annual growth; and nine products recorded 3.0% to 3.9% sales expansion during the year. * Among the 80 products in this analysis, 65 achieved car and light truck 2014 aftermarket growth at user-price. * Fifteen products failed to record 2014 growth or suffered a 2014 sales decline. SERVICE (DIFM) MARKET * Products installed by mechanics on light vehicles (DIFM market) climbed from $78.0 billion to $80.8 billion between 2013 and 2014 at user-price, a 3.6% increase. * Products installed by mechanics generated 79.5% of 2014 light vehicle product sales. * Cars represented 37.7% of 2014 Service market product sales, down from 47.1% of the 2004 market. In contrast, light trucks soared from 52.9% of 2004 Service market product volume to 62.3% of the 2014 Service market. * The Service market accounted for 95.9% of light vehicle product growth from 2004 to 2014 at user-price. * The number of car and light truck Service (DIFM) outlets declined from 240,693 during 2004 to 227,211 at mid-year 2014, a loss of 13,482 light vehicle repair outlets. * There were 36,000 fewer service bays in the car and light truck aftermarket at mid-year 2014 compared to 2004, a 3.0% decline in total bay population. * There was a significant change in service bay population among major types of light vehicle repair outlets between 2004 and 2014. Service Stations and Garages declined in bay count along with Dealers. Repair Specialists recorded the largest increase in light vehicle service bays over this ten-year span, followed by Foreign Specialists, and Tire Stores. * The average number of light vehicles per service bay in the U.S. grew dramatically, from 167 cars and light trucks for each service bay in 2000 to an estimated 212 cars and light trucks per bay at mid-year 2014. * Lang Marketing estimates the number of cars and light trucks on U.S. roads per service bay will increase to 218 by mid-year 2016, a 63% increase compared to 1990 when there were an estimated 134 cars and light trucks for each light vehicle service bay in the U.S. © 2015 by Lang Marketing Resources, Inc. 6 www.langmarketing.com http://www.langmarketing.com
