WHAT DOES A BICYCLE
FRIENDLY AMERICA
LOOK LIKE?

en years ago, the image that would have likely come to mind for many was Portland, Davis,
Boulder or maybe Copenhagen. But this could be a non-starter for communities who have little interest in simply trying to replicate some other city's culture. These exceptional cities have
been valuable in showing what can be done to make bicycling a
safer, more comfortable and more convenient option for more
people, and we needed more apples-to-apples comparisons for
the great diversity of towns, cities and counties of the U.S.
Today, we're happy that there are now model communities,
businesses and universities of all shapes and sizes in every state
and region. These exemplary places can now be experienced
by bike by so many more people, which in turn is leading to a
shared national understanding of what is possible-as well as
the work we still have left to do.
One of the strengths of the Bicycle Friendly America program
is that it meets people and places where they are and demystifies
what might seem like an insurmountable list of tasks. It helps
prioritize the next steps to improve. We are proud to provide
these customized action plans for applicants from small businesses all the way up to the largest cities in America. What works for one place may not translate to
another. The biggest success stories are from those that take advantage of the growing collection of
best practices from around the country and build a comprehensive program that reaches not just a
select few but entire communities.
We've seen first-hand how bicycling is a connector and a vehicle for an equitable, healthy and
sustainable future. As you read the stories in this issue, we hope you'll find inspiration from these
powerful examples that you can share with decision makers in your community. We all need to
make the case that investing in bicycling is about so much more than bikes, and these great models
of transformation help to make that possible.
