Recently our Executive Director Alex Doty was interviewed by BBC News for a piece titled "How the humble bicycle is making a comeback in US cities." "'Making roads safe for bikers makes them safe for everybody,' says Alex Doty, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. 'We often talk about a standard we call eight to 80-does a grandmother feel comfortable riding on a street with her grandson? If they do, then that's a street that's got it right. ... The bicycle was the iPhone of its time. It was the new technology disrupter and attracted these great inventive talents,' says Doty. 'And as a piece of machinery it has stayed remarkably similar. The Wright brothers would know how to work on a bike in my house today.'" League Board President Karen Jenkins wrote about her experiences re-discovering bicycling later in life in Momentum Mag: "At the time I started riding a bicycle, I did not know it would be the best investment I would make to maintain my health as I grow older. The benefits of regularly riding a bike include weight loss and preventing serious diseases such as stroke and heart attacks. ... I now take my bike almost every time I drive to visit a museum, go to a meeting, or visit friends. With my bike, I no longer worry how far I have to park from my destination. ... I have looked at my community in ways I never noticed in a car. Most surprising was the physical strength and tenacity I discovered which I did not know I possessed.
