BICYCLE FRIENDLY BUSINESS nity evaluations to expand the multi-use trail system in the township. They also work to find funding for expanding the trail system, and helped to pass a complete streets proclamation to guide future infrastructure development in being more pedestrian and bicycle friendly. Wheelie Fun Bike Shop takes a multifaceted approach in their efforts to reach out to their community. Through education, advocacy and civic engagement, they hope to continue to grow the enthusiasm and infrastructure for cycling in Powell, Ohio. SHOP: MAD DOG CYCLES LOCATION: OREM, UTAH & PROVO, UTAH BFB STATUS: GOLD Mad Dog Cycles has two store locations in Utah and has been a part of the Bicycle Friendly Business program since 2009. As one of the first recipients of the BFB award in Utah, Mad Dog Cycles wanted to see safety on the roads in their community. "We wanted to see that improve," says Randy Gibb, owner of Mad Dog Cycles. "What can we control? We wanted to get out there and work with local businesses to become bicycle friendly," says Gibb. Through staff support, bicycle advocacy, and an efficient and extensive mobile bike shop, Mad Dog Cycles epitomizes what it means to be a Bicycle Friendly Business. Mad Dog Cycles has created its own commuter credit program for its employees. For every 50 commutes to work on bike, Mad Dog Cycles gives its staff a $75 credit to the store. They also provide bike parking, changing rooms, and lockers 6 BICYCLE FRIENDLY AMERICA for all workers. "This is a standard at our stores," says Gibb. Mad Dog has also advocated for better bike infrastructure. When the city of Orem began developing a bicycle and pedestrian master plan, a representative of the shop was invited to contribute to the conversation as a member of the Project Steering Committee. The result was a 150+ page report of principles and guidelines for developing and implementing better bike and pedestrian infrastructure for Orem. The city is now in the process of implementing the plan that will connect with neighboring cities. In addition to advocacy, Mad Dog Cycles provides comprehensive safety checks in a creative way. Initially, the shop set up tents at different events to provide assistance to bikers, and they soon built a mobile bike shop to better serve event-goers. With a shop on wheels, which is thoroughly stocked and easy to transport, they can more easily provide free safety checks and on-site maintenance at bike races and other programs. One of the biggest happenings that the mobile bike shop rolls in for is the Utah High School Cycling League of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), a national mountain biking program for student athletes. They provide free basic maintenance services for high school students that race in the program. In 2015, more than 1,600 students from 77 teams participated. Mad Dog Cycles truly expands upon the role of a bike shop in a community. By supporting their bike commuting employees, advocating for better bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and working with riders of all ages at a variety of events, this bike shop has earned their BFB Gold status. SHOP: LANDRY'S BICYCLES LOCATION: 7 STORES IN EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS BFB STATUS: PLATINUM Landry's Bicycles is one of the first bike shops in the country to have received a Bicycle Friendly Business award. The BFB program was developed by Alison Dewey, a former Landry's store manager and currently the National Bike Summit Director of the League of American Bicyclists. The shop's connection to Dewey inspired the idea to apply for BFB status, but their devotion to bicycle advocacy, along with the support they provide to their employees, and their connection to the community made them ideal candidates for the award. "We wanted to set an example for other businesses, for other bike shops, and to set a model for all of the communities where we have stores." says Jack Johnson, Marketing and Advocacy Director of Landry's Bicycles. Since Landry's received the award, employees have been more inspired to bike to work. The shop offers a $20/month credit to all bike commuting staff and approximately two-thirds of employees participate in the program. The shop also creates a bicycle friendly workplace by providing bike parking, tools, showers and lockers in all of their locations for their employees. Landry's also provides bike racks outside and inside their stores for customers to utilize. http://www.landrys.com/ https://www.bikeutah.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Orem-Bicycle-and-Trails-Master-Plan.compressed.pdf http://www.maddogcycles.com/ http://www.nationalmtb.org/ http://www.nationalmtb.org/
