How did you find out about the Smart Cycling Program?

I originally was going online to find cycling groups to be a part of
because I like to ride, but I don't have any friends that cycle. I went to
some San Diego Meetup groups for cycling, and I found out about the
San Diego Bicycle Coalition. I went on their website, and that's when I
found that there was a Smart Cycling safety class.

What did you learn from the Traffic Skills 101 class?
The experience I had was amazing, because the instructors were great
and really had a lot of enthusiasm for cycling and being safe when you're
out on the road. I've been road biking for about 10 years. When I first
started cycling on the road bike, I was pretty apprehensive, so I stayed
on trails. Then I branched out. I wanted to bike more, so I was out on
the roads, but I just didn't know that I had certain rights. I thought I just
had to dodge the cars and that I was just extraneous. Taking the class
gave me a lot of empowerment to be out on the road and to have the
right to be there.
The biggest things I learned were visibility and learning where to
be on the road, to stay out of the door zone where I'm less safe. That's
basically how it's changed my cycling. I can be more confident. I can go
more places and take the part of the road that I was entitled to.
