COMPETITIONS
American Legion High School
Oratorical Contest
Students in grades 9-12 present an
8- to 10-minute prepared speech on an
aspect of the U.S. Constitution. Students
then receive, about 5 minutes before
their turn to speak, the topic for a 3- to
5-minute speech on some phase of the
Constitution (chosen from four topics
announced each year). State winners
each receive a $1,500 scholarship and
an all-expenses-paid trip to the national
finals in Indiana, where they compete
for scholarships of $18,000, $16,000, and
$14,000 for first- through third-place,

John F. Kennedy Profile in
Courage Essay Contest
Students in grades 9-12 submit an essay
of less than 1,000 words about an elected
U.S. public official who, since 1956, has
acted courageously to address a political
issue at the local, state, or national level.
First- and second-place winners receive
$10,000 and $5,000, respectively, and
five finalists receive $500 each. The
first-place winner also receives an allexpenses-paid trip to Boston to attend
the award ceremony at the Kennedy

Mock Trial

Teams of eight students prepare both
a prosecution and a defense and argue
a hypothetical case. State champions
advance to the National High School
Mock Trial Championship, held at a different location each May (2014: Madison,

Moot Court
In a simulation of an appeals court, teams
of high school students prepare and present arguments on a legal case to a judge.

We the People
Middle and high school students demonstrate their knowledge of civics and
government at district, regional, state,
and national competitions. A National
Invitational Competition is also available for students for whom a state-level
contest is not offered. The National
High School Competition culminates
with a simulated congressional hearing
on Capitol Hill. Prizes at the state and
national levels include trophies, plaques,

Boys State/Boys Nation and Girls
State/Girls Nation (multiple sites)
Grade 11; 1 week. Local American Legion
chapters nominate students to attend
Boys or Girls State, which is held on college campuses throughout the country.
Participants engage in mock legislative
sessions, campaigning, party rallies,
debating, and voting. Two outstanding participants of each Boys State and
Girls State will be selected to attend
Boys Nation or Girls Nation, where
they will learn how government and the
democratic process work on a national

Columbia University
Summer Program (NY)
Grades 9-12; 10 days; residential
and commuter. Course offerings
for students in grades 9-10 include
Introduction to Trial Advocacy and
The Media and Politics, while those
for students in grades 11-12 include
Constitutional Law, Leadership in
Law, Legal Reasoning, Research, and
Writing, and Trial Advocacy. www.

FBINAA Youth Leadership
Program (VA)
Ages 14-16; 1 week. Students must be
nominated by their state chapter of
FBI National Academy Associates for
this program on the campus on the
National FBI Academy in Quantico.
Each day, students participate in
physical training and attend classes to
learn about the U.S. system of criminal
justice, police organization and function, criminal law, and the structure
and operation of criminal courts. www.
