But when the victim is an animal, the first step is to identify the species of the victim-a task that can be especially challenging if the only remains are a feather, a section of hide, or a single bone. The identification can be all the more difficult if these fragments have been made into products intended for trade: hides are tanned, bones carved. Often it is only after these fragments have been identified that investigators can determine if a crime has actually been committed. Is the feather from a scarlet macaw, the bone from an orangutan? If so, the people involved in trading these items have violated U.S. laws and international treaties-and thanks to scientists at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Forensics Lab, they can be effectively prosecuted for their crimes. In this photo, forensic scientist Margaret Smith measures and compares animal skulls. At this highly specialized forensic lab-the only one in the world devoted to crimes against wildlife-experts in chemistry, criminalistics, genetics, morphology, and pathology use state-of-the-art technology to help identify species used in products ranging from medicinal powders to clothing. Their work has been foundational in the rapidly growing discipline of wildlife forensics and gives force to the laws designed to protect animals.
