and A Tale of Determination and Discovery Nanocrystals by Janelle Tam Cellulose: you might know it as the organic compound that gives trees their rigidity. After its discovery in 1838, it didn't take scientists long to find many uses for this organic polymer. By the early 20th century, cellulose was being used to make celluloid, rayon, and cellophane. In the last few decades, scientists have discovered that cellulose also has interesting characteristics at the nanoscale. When the cellulose in wood pulp is dissolved with concentrated sulfuric acid, tiny rod-shaped crystals about 1/3000 the width of a strand of human hair are left behind. Called nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), this plantderived material has remarkable properties. Not only is it structurally stronger than steel at the same dimensions, but it also possesses many fascinating chemical, magnetic, and electrical properties. Most important, it is easily functionalized, meaning that it can be given different characteristics by attaching molecules to its surface. These properties, coupled 18 imagine with its status as a natural, abundant, renewable resource, make it an extremely attractive material for a wide range of applications from food additives to antimicrobial films to lightweight body armor.
