Medalist in the New York State
Scholastic Championship Rowing
Regatta and competed in the World
Indoor Rowing Championship, finishing 17th out of 228 competitors.
He received the New York State
Rowing Association Scholar-Athlete
Award and will compete at Cornell
University for the Men's Lightweight
Rowing Team. Lianidis was a First
Team Cape Atlantic League Soccer
All-star and a New Jersey State Allstar. She will play Soccer at The
College of New Jersey.
DOP Athletic Awards
Special Recognitions
The Daughters of Penelope presented
Speridoula Elea Karras, a high school
Tennis and Basketball standout, with
the Zoe Cavalaris Award. She will compete for the Ohio Wesleyan University
Women's Basketball team. In addition, Laurie June Georgia Markatos,
a 1997 Cavalaris Award honoree,
received induction into the Daughters
of Penelope Athletic Hall of Fame for
her semi-pro career in Softball as a
pitcher. She was also inducted into the
Lewis University Ring of Honor.
AHEPA presented a special posthumous
recognition to the family of Brother
James D. Tanos. Brother Tanos' vision
for an Olympic-inspired track and field
competition remains to this very day,
nearly four decades later, with the TriState Pan-Hellenic Track Meet held in
Upper Darby, Pa. Also, Brother George
Papalambros received the District
Athletic Director of the Year Award for
his efforts to organize several sporting
events, including Greek Heritage Night
at Fenway Park in Boston.
District 13 Hosts Annual Sports Banquet
AHEPA District 13 held its 49th Annual Sports Award Banquet,
June 3, 2016. Eighty athletes from 32 different schools in
District 13 representing 22 different sports were honored for
their participation and achievement in local community athletics. More than 250 persons attended.
In addition to each student-athlete receiving a plaque
for their athletic accomplishments, $7,500 in scholarships
were awarded to ten recipients. In addition, six memorial
awards were presented to outstanding athletes. Victoria
Stavropoulos, who plays Division I basketball at Georgia
Southern University, received the 2016 Phil Bouzeous most
outstanding athlete award.
Dave Eanet, WGN sports and the voice of the Northwestern
University Wildcats, served as emcee. The guest speaker was
Lou Canellis, who was a member of the TV and radio broadcast
team that covered the Chicago Bulls during the Michael Jordan

years. Lou is now a member of the Chicago Bears organization,
hosting five TV shows the Bears own and produce. Supreme
Athletic Director Louis Atsaves also addressed the audience.
The work of Committee Chairman Chris Atsaves and the
committee of Frank Korbos, Nick Lamnatos, Larry Pullman
and Peter Lekas to make the event a success was appreciated.
