AHEPA FAMILY CHAPTER NEWS
District 7
Chapter 245, Newport, R.I.
The chapter shares a thank you letter received from a scholarship award recipient. The letter reads: "I would like to thank
you and the AHEPA chapter for recognizing me as this year's
Benjamin Franklin Award winner for Portsmouth, R.I. High
School. I was informed that I am the first to win this award for
Portsmouth, and I hope this award becomes a tradition at my
school. Not only is it important to focus on academic achievement
and difficult classes but it is also important to value community
involvement and character. This is what makes the award the
more special. Thank you again. Signed, Jackson Levine." The
chapter now presents this annual award to a senior at each of
the three local high schools it serves on the island-Newport,
Middletown and Portsmouth.
District 11
Hancock Chapter 103, Weirton, W.V.
Hancock Chapter 103, Weirton, W.V. has mobilized to
secure and deliver relief aid to West Virginia communities devastated by the recent historic flooding-the
worst in a century. The floods claimed 23 lives and
devastated as many as 1,200 homes.
District 8
Athens Chapter 24, Boston
The chapter, together with SOP HUB Chapter 27, organized the
inaugural Greek Heritage Night at Fenway Park, May 13, 2016.
The evening honored the late, great Greek American athlete,
Harry Agganis, who played for the Boston Red Sox. Greg Agganis
and Bill Galanis, representatives of the Agganis Foundation,
participated at a pre-game ceremony at Home Plate. As part of
the festivities, three Hellenic heritage dance group performed,
including: Sons and Daughters of Alexander the Great, George
Papadopoulos, director; The Metropolis of Boston Dance Group,
Dr. John Pappas, director; and the Lykeion Dance Group,
Irene Savas, director. Thank you to SOP PST Jason-Demetrios
Vergados, and members of the Greek Heritage Night Committee,
Brothers Alex Mavradis, George Papalambros, and Peter J.
Vergados, for organizing the event.
