AHEPA Family Elections

T

he organizations that comprise the AHEPA
family also held elections. Eva Jean
Fomalont, Albuquerque, N.M., was elected
Daughters of Penelope Grand President; Bill
Poulos III, Canton, Ohio, was elected Sons
of Pericles Supreme President; and Sophia
Shakolas, La Palma, Calif., was elected Maids of
Athena Grand President.

AHEPA Athletics Inducts Five into Hall
of Fame

F

ive standouts in athletic competition were
inducted into the AHEPA Hellenic Athletic
Hall of Fame. The Class of 2017 included:
May Kotsopoulos, college and professional
basketball player; Dan Mavraides, college and
professional basketball player; Nick Tsiotos,
college basketball player and journalist; Aleke
Tsoubanos, college tennis player and coach;
and Dr. James Vailas, college football player and
sports medicine.
In addition, the recipients of the Harry Agganis
Award and William Chirgotis Award were
announced along with the nine recipients of

HEPA hosted a public policy panel with
Greece's Defense Minister Panos Kammenos
and Ambassador of Cyprus to the U.S. Leonidas
Pantelides, allowing the two government
officials to provide their perspectives on
the latest developments in the eastern
Mediterranean. A Q&A with the audience
followed their presentations. Brother Andrew
Kaffes moderated the panel discussion.
A highlight of this year's convention was the
inaugural national Hellenic history tournament,
where high-school students from across the
United States competed in games designed to
challenge them on their knowledge of Hellenic
history from 5,000 BC to the present.
The AHEPA National Educational Foundation
sponsored the tournament, which awarded
more than $10,000 in prizes to the winners.
Congratulations to "The Hellenes" team
comprised of: Alexander Koutsoukos, Phoebe
Hartch, and Lukas Koutsoukos, which captured
the championship. AHEPA Chapter 99,
Stamford, Conn., sponsored the team.
