IN MEMORIAM
Past Supreme President Gus J. James II
AHEPA mourned the passing of Past Supreme President Gus J. James, II, Virginia
Beach, Va. Brother James, a Life Member of AHEPA Chapter 122, Norfolk, Va., with
54 years of service, passed away January 1, 2018. He was 79. Brother James served
two terms as Supreme President (2005-2007). He also served in other national offices,
including Supreme Counselor and as member of the Board of Trustees. In 2015,
Brother James was presented with the AHEPA Lifetime Achievement Award at the
41st Biennial Congressional Banquet.
James was born in the Cypriot village of Koma tou Yialou and left Cyprus with his
two sisters at the age of seven. An attorney, James retired from Kaufman & Canoles,
the largest law firm in southeastern Virginia, after serving as the firm's Chairman of
the Board, President, and Managing Partner.
"Brother James will be remembered as a strong, brilliant, and inspirational leader,
who left a legacy at each level of office in which he served the Order," Supreme President Carl R. Hollister said. "An outstanding
Ahepan, and stalwart of the southeastern Virginia community, Brother James served on the boards of several public and private
institutions and was a tremendous advocate for Hellenic ideals and Orthodoxy. He truly will be missed. Our deepest sympathies
and condolences are with his wife, Helen, and his family. May his memory be eternal."
Supreme Secretary George Anagnostos
AHEPA mourns the passing of Past Supreme Secretary George Anagnostos, Portsmouth, R.I.
Brother Anagnostos, a 35-year member of Maud Howe Elliott Chapter 245, Newport, R.I., passed
away December 15, 2017. In addition to serving as Supreme Secretary, Brother Anagnostos
served as Vice President of the Board of the AHEPA National Housing Corporation, and he
served as Copy Editor of The Ahepan magazine for nearly two decades.
"An exemplary Ahepan and citizen, Brother Anagnostos served the Order, the community,
and his country, with utmost pride and selfless dedication," Supreme President Carl R. Hollister,
who served with Brother Anagnostos on the AHEPA Housing Corporation board, said. "Brother
Anagnostos will be missed tremendously. Our deepest sympathies are with his wife, Ellen, and his
family. May his memory be eternal."
