Spanakos Twins Inducted into
Golden Gloves Hall of Fame
The AHEPA Athletic Department
congratulates the brothers
Spanakos, Petros and Nikos,
upon their induction into the
New York Daily News Golden
Gloves Hall of Fame, at
Brooklyn's Barclays Center on
April 17, 2014. The twins, Petros
and Nikos, are proud members
of the AHEPA Athletic Hall of
Fame, both inducted in the Class
of 1989.
Petros and Nikos, who have
remained very true to their
Hellenic roots and continue to
be very much involved in the
Order of AHEPA, were inducted
for their boxing exploits. From
1955 - 1964 Petros was a 10-time
undefeated
Golden
Glove
Champion, an unprecedented
feat, and Nikos won seven times.
Petros won a bronze medal
at the Pan-American games in
Chicago in 1959, and Nikos represented the United States at
the 1960 Olympics in Rome, as
a member of the United States
Olympic team. The Hall of Fame
Induction was held during the
intermission of the Championship
round of this year's Golden Gloves
competition.
At the Pan-American games
in Chicago in 1959, Casius Clay
(the future Mohammed Ali) was
Petros' roommate, and at the
Rome Olympic games in 1960
he was Nikos' Olympic roommate, and the Spanakos boys
have remained friends with
Mohammed Ali to this day.

New Jersey Ahepans Prepare
for Athens Marathon
Ahepans have the honor of raising funds for the various
charities its members support: Cooley's Anemia Foundation,
Penelope House and AHEPA Bone Marrow Foundation, among
others. In order to raise funds for the charitable causes,
two members of Monroe Chapter 75, Piscataway, N.J. have
decided to run the Athens Classic Marathon in Athens, Greece,
November 9, 2014.
Brothers Victor Stevens and Matt Szela will run the Athens
Marathon as members of Team AHEPA. Victor and Matt have
completed 20 and 15 marathons in the United States, respectively, and unlike other marathon races they have completed
previously, they are running for a charitable cause affiliated with
AHEPA and in celebration of Greek culture.
Sponsorship opportunities are available during their training and marathon runs up until October in preparation for
the Athens Marathon. To support their charitable run, please
