FIFTH DISTRICT AHEPA CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION
MARCHED TO A MILLION!

T

he AHEPA family's commitment to support
public health and medical research initiatives is wide-ranging and well-documented.
Most notable is the AHEPA's family work
to raise awareness and funds to find a cure
for Thalassemia (Cooley's Anemia), a genetic
blood disease affecting persons of Mediterranean descent.
However, in recent years, the AHEPA family also has made
significant strides in its support for cancer research.
The Fifth District AHEPA Cancer Research Foundation, Inc.
"Marched to a Million" at its 27th Annual Fall Gala, November 5,
2016, Edison, N.J., where it celebrated the cumulative awarding
of $1 million in grants to researchers working to find a cure for
cancer. The gala also honored individual doctors and researchers who are at the forefront of cancer research.
"The Foundation is extremely honored to be working
with top-notch cancer research institutions and doctors who
are among the best in their respective fields," Foundation
Chairman Antoinette Marousis-Zachariades said.
The Foundation presented its first grant of $5,000 to Fox
Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, September 16, 1990. Since,
the Foundation has awarded eighty-four research grants to various institutions for cancer research in the states of New Jersey,
New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware to hit the $1 million
mark in grant-giving.
At the gala, Marousis-Zachariades and Foundation Vice
Chairman Christos Prentzas presented the 2016 research
grants to the following doctors and institutions:
