I
t's no secret that Christians today in the Middle East are
passing through great duress.
The illusion of hope and transformation, which rose
like a cloud of dust kicked up by the Arab Spring, has
dissipated into a disturbing reality.
Amid the political mayhem, the historical Christian
population of the region, already a staggering minority, is further diminishing and losing rights within its respective governments. When analyzing this issue, the Holy Land, as the crux
of Christianity, inevitably comes to mind.
Indeed, the Church of Jerusalem faces a plethora of complex
contemporary challenges. They come in the form of violence
from religious fringes, lack of cooperation from governmental
authorities, legal property battles and financial strains.

However, the cycle of persecution and difficulties through
which Christians have passed in the Holy Land is not new. If you
ask someone from the inside, lumping the Holy Land together
with the devastating conflicts in Syria, Egypt and others in fact
does a disservice when it comes to producing solutions. The key
is to understand the dynamic of the Holy Land and its interlocked
history with the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem.
The Church was instituted on Pentecost, the day on which
Christians believe the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples of Jesus Christ, who spread the Gospel throughout the
world from Jerusalem. The Church, which is biblically speaking the "mother of all Christian Churches," was elevated to the
rank of Patriarchate in 451 at the Fourth Ecumenical Council
held in Chalcedon.
