A Tale of One
Hellene's Appreciation
for President Truman
George Drakos commissioned this painting of the Acropolis in appreciation of President Harry Truman.
I
n 1963, AHEPA donated and dedicated the Statue of
President Harry S. Truman in Athens, Greece. AHEPA
gifted the Truman Statue in grateful acknowledgment of
the Truman Doctrine, which helped the Greek people to
preserve their freedom and national integrity at a critical time.
It also expressed the devotion of the American people to the
ideal of Liberty. The statue is only one of eight statues that
exist overseas of former United States presidents.
In recent years, the United States Embassy in Athens had
been corresponding with the Harry S. Truman National Historic
Site in Independence, Missouri, in its effort to raise awareness
of the Truman Statue to various schools and organizations in
the United States. The Truman National Historic Site, maintained by the National Park Service, preserves the longtime
home of Truman and other properties associated with him. As
a result of the embassy's outreach, a museum technician at the

Site asked for the embassy's assistance in researching relatives
in Greece of George Nikolas Drakos, High Point, N.C.
But why?
In 1954, Drakos sent an oil painting of the Acropolis to
President Truman. The painting has been hanging in the residence since that time, but the motive behind why Drakos sent
the painting remained a mystery.
The small plaque that accompanied the painting refers to
Drakos as a "faithful friend," and subsequently President Truman
thanked Drakos in a letter sent to him in Athens in 1954.
After much research, including outreach to AHEPA District
3 Governor Jim Stasios, U.S. embassy officials, led by Consul
General Mark Marrano, found and spoke with the two surviving sons of George N. Drakos, the man who sent the painting
to President Truman.
