Advocated for Hospice
* Together with NHPCO's
Research Team, developed a
summary of findings from
NHPCO's third Economic
Impact Survey (referenced
in this month's cover story).
This valuable data is being
used to educate congressional,
White House and other
administrative officials.
* Maximized use of the
landmark research from
Mount Sinai's Icahn School of
Medicine on the cost savings of
hospice care. This included:
- Promoting the findings in
key Congressional offices
- Hosting a Congressional
briefing that featured the
study's lead author, Dr. Amy
Kelley
But there were many other
accomplishments too.

- Coordinating meetings
between Dr. Kelley and
Senate Finance Committee
senior Part A staff and
MedPAC staff.
* Launched a quarterly
newsletter in March for highlevel advocates, featuring
* In concert with local
hospices, increased in-district
engagement among members
of Congress. The HAN staff
tracked more than 70 such
activities in 2013, ranging
from We Honor Veterans and
IDT meetings to coordinating
visits with hospice patients
in the nursing home. (Few
tactics are more impactful
than such face-to-face
involvement.)
* Formed a Short-Length-ofService Task Force to examine
the driving forces behind the
phenomenon of short-stay
hospice patients, along with
its implications for policy
makers and the hospice
community. The group, which
is comprised of members
from the Public Policy,
Regulatory, and Quality and
Standards Committees, is
tasked with creating policy
recommendations as well as
provider tools.
* Created several new
resources that play
an important
