NHPCO and HAN Hosted "Conversations Before the Crisis" NHPCO and HAN hosted the policy symposium, "Conversations Before the Crisis," on April 23 to advance the national discussion on the need for advance care planning. The free event, designed to attract both Beltway insiders and the hospice community, featured a renowned list of speakers, including Newsweek contributor, Eleanor Clift, Time contributor, Joe Klein, and numerous thought leaders from the legal and faith communities. Senators Johnny Isakson (GA) and Ron Wyden (OR) and Representatives Jim McDermott (WA) and Phil Roe (TN) also participated. Affirmed Hospice Raised Public Awareness * Attracted more than one million visitors to NHPCO's Caring Connections website where a range of consumerrelated information is available. * Helped raise the profile of National Healthcare Decisions Day - and the importance of advance care planning - through the social media campaign, #Speak4me, and a free symposium hosted by NHPCO and the Hospice Action Network. (See "Conversations Before the Crisis" above.) myth with a photo and shared them on Twitter and Facebook, starting on World Day and ending in late November (to coincide with the conclusion of National Hospice Palliative Care Month). The six myth busters were also made available to members for use in their social media. (Members, continue to use them in 2014!) * Distributed the PSA, "It Must Be Love," to television and cable channels nationwide. The PSA, which was produced by filmmaker, Mark Meyers, was aired in 23 states and seen by an estimated 862,000 viewers, reflecting an estimated value of $504,137. (Watch the PSA now.) * In support of World Hospice Palliative Care Day, conducted a social media campaign to dispel six of Myth: Having hospice or palliative care the common means I only have days or hours to live. myths held by many Americans. The campaign paired each Myth: Hospice palliative care is just for the elderly.
