SkillsUSA Annual Report 2013 - (Page 13)
COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVES
A record 111 individuals and a record 11 teams received the
President's Volunteer Service Award for outstanding community
service efforts conducted and logged throughout the year. Those
numbers represent more than 42,000 service hours for 2013.
SkillsUSA has been involved in the PVSA program since 2008.
Community service is at the core of the SkillsUSA program and has
been since the organization was founded. More students than ever are
experiencing firsthand that they can make a difference in their communities, and communities across the nation are learning about SkillsUSA and
what sets its members apart from other young people.
At SkillsUSA's national conference, nearly 500 students took part
in the 12th annual Timberland PRO-sponsored community service
event in Kansas City, Mo. Since the program began, nearly 9,000
volunteers have served nearly 45,000 combined hours of
service.
NATIONAL CONFERENCE
The 2013 National Leadership and Skills Conference was the largest
in history, with 10,146 paid registrants. It marked only the
second time that paid registration exceeded the 10,000 threshold.
More than 16,000 total attended the event.
The continued expansion of SkillsUSA's national conference brings
more student, teacher and industry involvement at all levels of the
organization and draws public attention to our work. (For more on the
event, see Page 15.)
A record 350 VIPs from industry and education attended the
national conference.
More industry involvement at the conference solidifies the support of
existing partners and inspires the interest of prospective partners, making
our mission possible.
SKILLSUSA CHAMPIONSHIPS
An all-time record 5,905 contestants competed in 98 technical
and leadership contests (also a record) in a space equivalent to 16
football fields. The event was made possible by in-kind contributions
from education, industry and labor exceeding $36 million.
Over the last 10 years, the number of contests at the event has increased by 27 percent and the number of contestants by 24 percent.
The continuing growth in the SkillsUSA Championships represents thousands more students involved at the local-, district- and state-level competitions leading up to the national event. It also confirms the event as one
of America's biggest showcases for career and technical education.
