SkillsUSA Annual Report 2013 - (Page 14)

(2013 Accomplishments continued) SkillsUSA assembled its largest WorldTeam in history. The team of 20 traveled to Leipzig, Germany, to compete in the WorldSkills Competition. The overall SkillsUSA delegation attending the event was also the largest ever. (See Page 16 for details and results.) In fact, the WorldTeam has nearly tripled in size since a seven-member team competed in Helsinki, Finland, in 2005. SkillsUSA has represented the United States at the biennial WorldSkills Competition (WSC) since 1973. Assembling the largest SkillsUSA WorldTeam in history - along with the largest accompanying delegation - illustrates an increased awareness of the importance of career and technical education as it relates to the global economy. It also helps draw attention to the low level of government support the WorldTeam receives in relation to teams from other countries. ADVOCACY The annual Washington Leadership Training Institute was the biggest ever, with 314 students and advisors from 27 states attending. State delegations conducted student-led visits to 84 congressional offices. The training students receive at WLTI teaches them to become effective advocates, and their personal visits to Capitol Hill make a strong impact when it comes to public funding for career and technical education. VISIBILITY The average number of monthly hits on our website was 3.3 million, a record. "Likes" on our Facebook rose to 15,216. SkillsUSA's growing presence on the Web, including Facebook and other social media outlets, ensures that our members and partners can interact with the organization through the latest and most innovative tools available. It also builds a stronger sense of community for members and offers new ways to promote all aspects of SkillsUSA. In a global report from the World Economic Forum entitled, "Manufacturing for Growth," SkillsUSA was profiled as one of 14 leading examples of public-private partnerships worldwide "that have enabled innovation and technology advancement and promoted talent development." The SkillsUSA portion of the report can be read here: http://reports.weforum.org/manufacturing-growth/view/ skillsusa-united-states/ Greater and more varied publicity for the organization brings more attention to the SkillsUSA mission and the impact SkillsUSA's Program of Work has on our student members. It also raises public awareness of the growing skills gap and the need for skilled workers, as well as SkillsUSA's pivotal role in shortening that gap. SkillsUSA was included in an independent supplement to USA Today entitled, "Employing America." An article in the supplement described SkillsUSA and offered supportive comments from Mike Rowe and industry partners. USA Today is the national leader in newspaper circulation, with 2.9 million. A story on SkillsUSA students who built a robotic locker for a classmate with muscular dystrophy appeared on The Huffington Post website at: www.huffingtonpost.com/tag/skillsusa-national-roboticscompetition/1. 14 * SkillsUSA Annual Report 2013 http://reports.weforum.org/manufacturing-growth/view/skillsusa-united-states/ http://reports.weforum.org/manufacturing-growth/view/skillsusa-united-states/ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tag/skillsusa-national-robotics-competition/1 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tag/skillsusa-national-robotics-competition/1
