Chicago Residential Towers - (Page 15) SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION PREPARING FOR THE LOAD The foundation work for the subject towers was of course critical for such tall structures. Case Foundation was a key player in two of these. For One Museum Park East’s tower, Case installed 81 rock caissons in sizes ranging from 2.5 to 7.5 ft dia. Its crews excavated shafts down to the top of Dolomite bedrock located 90 ft below working grade. The allowable bearing capacity on top of the bedrock was 90 TSF(this was the first building in the city to use 90 TSF bearing capacity on the rock surface). For that site’s parking garage Case installed 64 soil-bearing belled caissons, sizes ranging from 3-ft dia shaft with a 7-ft dia bell to a 4-ft dia shaft with 12-ft-dia. bell. Six belled caissons had to be redesigned to rock bearing caissons because of unforeseen caving soil and water inflow encountered at the bearing level. For The Clare at Water Tower, Case installed three. 4-ft-dia x 140-ft-deep dewatering wells prior to caisson construction. The wells were installed five ft into Dolomite bedrock. They were used to lower the deep water table, originating from the bedrock level, below the bearing stratum so that caissons could be installed in a dry/stable soil stratum. Case installed 55 soil-bearing belled caissons, ranging from 2.5 ft diameter shaft with a 6-ft-dia bell to 7-ft-dia shaft with a 17.5-ft-dia bell. Workers excavated a 102-ft deep shaft to hard silty clay bearing stratum and then excavated the bell. The allowable bearing capacity at 102 ft below grade was 48,000 psf. It wasn’t possible to lower the deep water table sufficiently below the caisson-bearing stratum so Case Foundation encountered caving ground and water inflow in six caissons. To correct the ground problems the design team and Case developed remedial procedures including installing supplemental foundation elements and employing ground-improvement measures to solidify and strengthen the loose ground. ■ Midwest Construction 15 http://midwest.construction.com
