Its address is 55 E. Pearson St., at the southwest corner of Pearson and Rush in Chicago’s Gold Coast. Construction began in February 2006. First move-ins are scheduled for October, with final completion in December. The project cost approximately $130 million The 54-story structure offers a range of living programs for residents, from maintenance-free independent living to assisted living with skilled nursing facilities, all with services and amenities that rival the luxury hotels nearby. The 251 residences range from one to three bedrooms ranging from 820 to more than 2,100 square feet. Buyers also have purchased and combined several units. It has been six years since the planning stage, but two of those years were devoted to marketing so that we had commitments before starting construction. Q. What’s different about this downtown high rise? A. For one thing it’s 750,000 sq ft on a half acre. It’s also the nation’s first highrise continuing-care facility in a downtown. It’s also unique in that it incorporates university classrooms into a residence. Q. How will this project affect Chicago’s residential community? A. Aging city dwellers will no longer have to move to the suburbs for continuing care.
