The New World of Work - (Page 9) A World of Difference By R icha rd Wa hlq uist 2002, we rebranded our annual convention as Staffing World®. The name seemed right because the ASA convention had become the largest annual gathering of industry professionals from around the world. Our international contingent grows larger every year. But this year will be truly special. It is our distinct pleasure and honor to host the annual meeting of Ciett, the global federation of national staffing trade associations. From Norway to South Africa, from Ireland to Australia, and from Canada to Argentina, our colleagues from as many as 35 countries will join us in San Diego for education, expo, networking, and, of course, fun—ASA style. The focus of this year’s convention is the new world of work and the important role we are playing in shaping that world for employees, candidates, clients, and economies. The program features presentations and dialogue with worldrenowned consultants, authors, and industry experts who will explore the challenges and opportunities that face us all in the years ahead—whether we do business in Minneapolis or Mumbai. We will take a look at the current state of the U.S. and the global economies and the socioeconomic and political trends that will shape the way we do business. We will look at the effect of globalization and unionization on our clients and our industry. And we will drill down and discuss strategies and models for innovation that come from the development of capable, committed, and—increasingly— culturally diverse teams. As part of the opening plenary session, you are invited to an exclusive In executive briefing with the chief executive officers of four of the world’s most successful staffing and employment solutions companies. They do business in every business sector in virtually every international market. You will hear what keeps them up at night, how they view the competitive landscape, and what excites them most about the future. This session promises to be stimulating and provocative. The members I speak with who are coming to San Diego tell me the same thing. The business has become much more sophisticated and competitive. Attending Staffing World is an important investment in their company’s future. But there’s something else. It’s about making a difference. In his Last Word column on page 76, my good friend Sam Sacco writes about a woman who made a real difference on behalf of so many. Her name was Eileen Lesberg. She lived an amazing life and left an amazing legacy. She always wanted to know what else she could do for this industry that she loved so dearly. She never felt she did enough. I don’t know anyone who did more. The challenges that face companies of different sizes, in different markets, and in different sectors are not always the same. The common denominators that tie us all together are the contributions we make to people, clients, and the societies in which we live. Working together, we can enhance those contributions exponentially. We will spend some time at Staffing World talking about that too. I hope to see you there. ■ P resid en t an d CEO the voice of staffin the voice of staffin Staffing Success the voice of s 9 the voice of the voice of staffing
