FEATURES
Ports' Power as Conveners 10
Ports have the power to be conveners. They can
bring public and private leaders to the table and
can carry and share messages. But what's involved
in being a successful supply chain leader? A lot.
By Sandy Smith

FAST Act Impact 14
The FAST Act has provided $11 billion to build
a freight transportation network. In the first round
of grants, five of 18 awards were given to ports.
That suggests how important the FAST Act is and
will be to ports.
By Michael Fickes

Following Up on the
Funding Trail 17
When a port sets its sights on specific initiatives,
the onus is on the port to find the funds. In
addition to FASTLANE and TIGER grants, there
are other ways to source money. Port of Vancouver
USA, Philadelphia Regional Port Authority and
ProvPort in Providence, RI, all have success stories
to share about securing funds.

Infrastructure Coordination:
Competing Globally,
Acting Locally 20
The fact that almost every operational,
infrastructure and communication element at
every port and inland link in the U.S. is owned
by the private sector or state or local government
entities, creates a paradox: to compete globally,
solutions must be put in place locally.
By Lori Musser

A Digital Vision of Leadership:
Using Technology to
Improve the Supply Chain in
Los Angeles 24
Ports are used to competing with one another for
business. But technology is increasingly becoming
a selling point for ports and a way for ports to
distinguish themselves.
By Meredith Martino

XXV Latin American
Congress of Ports 26

PORTS + POLITICS
Every American, Every Day is
Impacted by Port Activities 28
Whether it is the food we eat, the cars we
drive, the light bulbs we use to light our homes,
or the clothing we wear, every American
household is impacted every single day by the
activity of our ports. This activity accounts for
over a quarter of our economy, generating trillions
of dollars and bringing in over $300 billion in
tax revenue each year.
By Rep. Alan Lowenthal and Rep. Ted Poe

GUEST ARTICLE
LED Lighting - The Right
Choice for Ports? 30
LED lighting has been in the marketplace for
around 10 years and, now that it has a track record,
is it still a good lighting option for ports? Past
technologies, future options and the direction
the industry is headed are all influencing ports'
decisions when it comes to lighting choices.

AAPA celebrated a milestone by bringing
together a record number of industry leaders
for its 25th annual Latin American Congress of
Ports in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. The Congress
gathered over 400 delegates from 32 countries and
four continents.
