»AAPA HEADQUARTERS AAPA's Security and IT Committees Gather for Joint Meeting On March 18-19, members of AAPA's Security Committee and Information Technology Committee gathered in San Diego, CA, for a joint meeting of the two committees. Primarily focused on the topic of cybersecurity, the meeting included presentations from the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Border Patrol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Secret Service. More than 50 attendees participated in the meeting, which was coordinated by Security Committee Chair Joe Lawless, Massachusetts Port Authority, and IT Committee Chair April Danos, Port Fourchon. Participants agreed that one of the key cybersecurity challenges facing ports is the issue of identifying and reporting breaches of security. The two committees will work jointly in the coming months to reach consensus about the issue of breaches and work with the appropriate federal agencies to obtain guidance for ports on this issue. The slate of engaging presenters included U.S. Department of Transportation Acting Deputy Sec. Victor Mendez, who discussed MAP-21 reauthorization, and political advisers and strategists Ed Goeas (The Tarrance Group) and Celinda Lake (Lake Research Partners), who talked about the issues driving the upcoming 2014 elections. Tuesday's keynote address by Canada's Minister of Transport Lisa Raitt focused on Canadian transportation policy, while Major Gen. John Peabody did a deep dive into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers civil works projects, including navigation channel dredging. Other sessions included roundtable discussions on cruise, container and non-container trade issues; the challenges of managing cybersecurity and alternative energy cargoes, fuels and facilities at their ports; and factors affecting maritime logistics. Also on Tuesday, AAPA awarded its "Port Person of the Year" award to U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster (R-PA), who spoke about their bipartisan effort to champion a water resources bill through each of their respective chambers of Congress this fiscal year. Both declined to accept their award until the bill was approved. In late May, the House and Senate each passed WRRDA with overwhelming bipartisan majorities, and AAPA will soon present both Sen. Boxer and Rep. Shuster with their much-deserved Port Person of the Year awards. 6 AAPA SEAPORTS MAGAZINE MEREDITH MARTINO, DIRECTOR OF PUBLICATIONS, DIGITAL MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY mmartino@aapa-ports.org MARY BETH LONG, SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING SPECIALIST mlong@aapa-ports.org Research & Informational Services DR.
