» GUEST VIEWPOINT Cruise Lines and Ports: Working Together for Seamless Experiences Interview with Cindy D'Aoust, President and CEO, Cruise Lines International Association I n her role as president and CEO of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which she has held since March 2016, Cindy D'Aoust directs CLIA's global team to successfully unify, represent, advocate and promote the common interests of the organization's members and the global cruise industry. She has more than two decades of experience in the hospitality and travel industries. Here, she answers some questions about ways cruise lines and ports work together for the betterment of both. 1. What are some examples of ways cruise lines have worked with ports to help make the partnership more profitable? The goal of cruise lines and ports is simple: They both want to ensure there is a strong infrastructure in place to handle growing capacity and that cruise passengers enjoy a great vacation experience. Cruise lines and ports work together to create a seamless experience for travelers as they depart from the cruise ships and explore new destinations through the ports. These business partners collaborate on everything from port renovations and getting authorization and funding to working with the governments. And the results are more efficient operations and a seamless traveler experience. CLIA is committed to creating opportunities for cruise lines and ports to create stronger relationships through education, industry events and networking opportunities. 2. How has legislation changed and how have those changes affected the bottom line of the cruise industry? Just like the cruise industry, legislation continues to evolve, which, in turn, has an effect on our industry. We must adjust our practices to meet those changes, especially when it comes to the environment. CLIA Cruise Line Members work to protect the environment because it is the right thing to do, and because it is fundamental to the success of the cruise industry. We are committed to developing, promoting and implementing policies and practices that exceed international regulations and requirements to reduce waste and emissions. 3. What are the main concerns a smaller port might have, when it comes to incorporating a cruise terminal? Small ports often have fewer resources so must be selective in their investments. Ports rely heavily on the relationships they have with cruise lines, and this can be particularly true for smaller ports. Ongoing itinerary changes, technology enhancements and the growing passenger numbers all impact the planning, organization and development of cruise terminal updates. 4. Why would a port want to add a cruise terminal? Developing a cruise terminal is a big commitment and can have a positive impact on business and destination infrastructure. Having the support and interest from cruise lines is a driving factor in determining whether to embark on such a large investment. Success requires that ports address infrastructure including passenger management and experience. 5. What cruise terminal upgrades bring the best ROI to a port? Often times, the nautical infrastructure of ports is the focus when investing in and improving a cruise terminal. It is also important to make the embarkation and debarkation experience easy for cruise lines and passengers. For example, providing passenger boarding bridges, especially for larger ships, provides great value. Also beneficial are updates to check-in areas, seating areas, luggage areas and customs areas. When ports are deciding where and what to invest in, getting input from cruise lines is a great way to guarantee that the improvements are providing maximum ROI. ● Success requires that ports address infrastructure including passenger management and experience. 60 AAPA SEAPORTS MAGAZINE
