Port of Portland: Continuing to Grow its Niche
Automobile imports remain "an important line of business to the port due to the economic value," O'Hollaren
said. "In terms of employment, that fills an important
part of our mission and generates revenue directly to the
port to sustain ourselves and invest in other facilities."
O'Hollaren notes that there are 600 direct jobs attributable to auto handling, including longshoremen, processing
vehicles and support throughout the supply chain.
The auto niche does require the use of a lot of land.
"Anybody in the auto business will tell you, it's the most
important ingredient and it takes a lot of it," O'Hollaren
said. "We have developed and protected property to
support this business, which for Portland is our competitive advantage."
Inland connections are equally important, and rail and
trucking play roles, driving need for rail lines and highways.
"That's a common question: identifying the best use
for limited port assets," O'Hollaren said. "Because of our
track record and the importance of auto imports, I expect
the port to preserve and possibly expand its land base.
There are always competing interests and I'm sure there
always will be. We need to stay with the best prospect."
That is decidedly auto - but it isn't just receiving shipments from Japanese automakers Honda and Toyota. As
Hyundai has grown its presence in the U.S., the South
Korean automaker has proven to be an "important client,"
O'Hollaren said. Autos also are being shipped up from
Mexico, and exports are on the increase, particularly as
Ford and other U.S. manufacturers target the rapidly
expanding Chinese market.
That led to the development of a 19-acre yard primarily to handle the Ford exports. "We just dedicated that
a few weeks ago, and it didn't take long to fill that up,"
O'Hollaren said. "That is positive news for Ford, for
the port and for the country."
The project was jointly financed by the
port, the state and the tenant, Auto
Warehousing Company.
"Our investment can induce private
investment as well," he said. "Public
investment can be leveraged to
attract private investment."
