hose involved in the port industry have a "strong culture of
sharing and helping others,"
said Kurt J. Nagle, President
& CEO, AAPA, at the 106th Annual
Convention in Long Beach in October.
And, proof was not in short supply. The
entire industry pulled together recently to
offer assistance to more than 100 industry
colleagues, especially those affected by the
earthquakes in Mexico and the hurricanes,
such as Harvey, Maria and Irma.
"We were reminded of the tremendous power of Mother Nature,"
concurred Wendy Zatylny, president of The Association of Canadian
Port Authorities.
The collective power of the industry is
also being tested in other ways. "This is a

time of intense and considerable change.
To succeed in this change, we have to
work together," satid Zatylny, adding that
the expo is an excellent way "to increase
our collective knowledge. Together we
are better."
This sense of community was tangible
throughout the entire event, from the
opening address by AAPA Chairman
of the Board Mark McAndrews, Port
Director at Port of Pascagoula, to the
AAPA Annual Membership Meeting
and Installation of Officers/ 2017-2018
Board of Directors Meeting on the last
day, when Steve Cernak began his one
year term as the 2017-18 chairman of
the board. Cernak is Chief Executive
and Port Director for Port Everglades
in Broward County, Fla., and also chairs

the association's U.S. delegation, whose
other officers include Chairman-Elect
William D. Friedman of the ClevelandCuyahoga County Port Authority, and
Vice Chairman John D. Wolfe of The
Northwest Seaport Alliance.
Canadian delegation officers are:
Chairman Denis Caron, Belledune Port
Authority; Chairman-Elect Carl Laberge,
Saguenay Port Authority; Vice Chairman -
Sean Hanrahan, St. John's Port Authority;
and Immediate Past Chairman Gaétan
Boivin, Trois-Rivières Port Authority.
Chairing the Caribbean delegation this
year is Clement Reid, Port Authority of
the Cayman Islands. The chair-elect is
Glenn Roach of Barbados Port Inc; and
the vice chair is Alfred Henley, British
Virgin Islands Port Authority.
