— as well as elaborately designed areas in which
designers (interior designers, interior architects,
architects and developers) marketed their skills and
abilities to the general public in an open, interdisciplinary environment.
“Design,” as a respected entity, was further
acknowledged in elaborate, highly-publicized
ceremonies attended by local officials. Numerous conversations with members of ASID partner organization,
the International Federation of Interior Architects/
Designers (IFI), conﬁrmed that issues affecting the
interior design profession are indeed global in nature
and that there are more areas of common interest than
disparities in terms of practice.
Working in, and with, emerging economies
requires an open mind and a strategic approach to
conducting business. In fact, the old adage “business
as usual” could not be further from the truth as the
most successful companies employ creative thinking to develop a global mindset while acknowledging
new business models. Interior designers have the propensity for creative thinking and can contribute on
multiple levels to acknowledge and participate in the
globalization that inﬂuences the profession. As an
organization, ASID is playing a role in the global conversation, actively contributing to critical discussions
on design that advance the profession and communicate the impact of design on the human experience.
It is an exciting time to be part of this conversation
and the invitation to participate in the Chinese Design
Awards opened the door and enlightened us to the
opportunities ahead! i
lot about globalization in the last few
years, many of us may not consider it
very relevant on a personal level. We
may even wonder how it affects us in
the context of interior design businesses that tend to be more local than global in focus.
Well, I can tell you that the inﬂuence of the global
market is here and it has impacted myriad industries
— including ours — in many ways.
With the inﬂuence of globalization and technology,
entirely new business models have emerged, forcing a
paradigm shift in thinking about how business is conducted and where the potential markets are. Traditional
business models have shifted, adapted and gone by the
wayside, in favor of more innovative, dynamic and collaborative approaches. Moreover, in countries with
expanding economies and exploding populations, the
resultant environmental issues mean that the impact of
design is widely felt as urbanization creates challenges
and competition for well-designed spaces.
On a recent trip to Guangzhou, China, for the
Chinese Design Awards, I had the opportunity to
witness the effect of the global economy full-force
in an energetic business environment. The Chinese
are already embracing new lifestyles as a result of
the country’s exponential economic growth and the
trend toward globalization is nowhere near over.

growth in international markets in the next few
years, with about 40 percent growth in India and
