PRO BONO PROJECT SUPPORTS ORGANIZATION FOR DISABLED ATHLETES/
ALMOST NO BUDGET. Strict accessibility require-
ments. Pro bono. At ﬁrst glance, this might sound
like a designer’s worst nightmare. But for Sarah
Barnard, Allied ASID, LEED AP, these challenges
formed the basis for an incredibly successful — and
more important, personally rewarding — project.
After donating her design services to an auction beneﬁtting Life Rolls On, a subsidiary of the
people affected by spinal cord injury, using action
sports as a platform for inspiring the inﬁnite possibilities beyond paralysis. In addition to supporting
research and promoting awareness, LRO’s primary
goal is to produce adaptive extreme sports events
(e.g., surﬁng, skateboarding, snowboarding) that
make it possible for the disabled to participate in
the sports they are passionate about.
Furnishings and materials were selected for their ability to
reﬂect the youth and energy of the Life Rolls On brand, while
honoring the more traditional aesthetic expectations of the
group’s parent organization.

was approached the next year by LRO’s executive
director, asking if she would consider designing
their new office space.
