member profi le Wade Sand & Gravel Co., Inc. H eadquartered near downtown Birmingham, Wade Sand & Gravel Co., Inc. is a large stone quarry and crushing plant located on approximately 400 acres on the former Republic Steel Site. They are a producer of limestone and dolomite for the asphalt, concrete and road building industry in Alabama. They are an approved crushed stone source for the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). In 1932, Robin Wade, Sr., an employee of Republic Steel Corporation convinced them to let him provide the service of supplying their iron ore for their steel. That year he formed R.A. Wade Company and began quarrying limestone and dolomite exclusively for Republic Steel’s use at their East Thomas plant. They continue to operate that plant to this day. In 1957, under the leadership of Robin Wade, Jr., Superior Products, Inc. was formed and continues producing today at its Chilton County location. In 1961, the R.A. Wade Company merged into Wade Sand and Gravel Company, Inc. They mine the limestone used in the asphalt and concrete material business. The quarry also processes a high quality dolomite for their steel and iron customers. Robin A. Wade, III, became the third generation to work in the family business in 1979. After graduating from the University of Alabama, he started his career as a quarry foreman. He was later promoted to superintendent and then to president in 1987. In 2002 Red Bluff Sand and Gravel, LLC was formed from a joint venture with Lehigh Hanson. Red Bluff Sand and Gravel is headquartered in Prattville. Although the outward appearance at Wade Sand & Gravel looks like the typical quarry, once onsite you fi nd something not found at most gravel quarries. Among the old Republic Steel buildings are unique sculptures by the late John Scott, an African-American sculptor and professor at Xavier University that produced colorful works of art produced from old discarded pieces of machinery. Wade Sand & Gravel is not only a successful business, but thanks to the Wades, their quarry is visually appealing along with being environmentally conscious. ❏ 6772 Highway 79 N P.O.
