Alabama Guardrail, Inc.
labama Guardrail, Inc. began
November 1974 as an Alabama
corporation formed by James
E. McKee in Pinson, Ala. He continued to grow the company as owner/
operator until his retirement October
2006. At that time, he sold the company to Catherine Huff (51 percent) and
Keith Dillard (49 percent), who continue
ownership today. The company recently
relocated its facilities to Cleveland, Ala.
on U.S. Hwy 231 in Blount County.
Alabama Guardrail, Inc. was certified
as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise
in 2010. The company operates primarily in the north half of Alabama and is
only licensed in Alabama. They are a
general contractor specializing in the
installation and maintenance of highway
guardrails and end anchors; highway
denied-access fencing; highway overhead signs; permanent vehicular impact
attenuators and traffic control. Ninety
percent of their work is through prime
contractors on ALDOT let projects. The
other 10 percent is county and municipal Annual Bid Contracts and private
work. Since 2006, Alabama Guardrail,
Inc. has grown from 25 to 45 employees
and doubled revenues.
One of Alabama Guardrail's most
notable projects they worked on was
the original installation and continued
maintenance of the guardrails at Barbers
Motorsports Park in Jefferson County.
The crews continue to be on stand-by
for the big races to maintain the guardrails. Television coverage of the races
and the many commercials filmed at the
Park usually showcase the guardrails in
the background - a very proud moment
for the company. The most challenging
projects are the interstate maintenance
contracts. The majority of the work is
required to be done at night and, Huff
describes it as "working on the track at
Talladega Superspeedway while the race
is in progress."
